Scope of Work

The City has begun constructing a new 48-inch water transmission line that will cover over 30 miles from the Lake Fort Smith Water Treatment Plant located in Mountainburg to Fort Smith. The new line will replace the original 27-inch water transmission line constructed in the 1930s. This project will be implemented in phases and is planned for completion in 2025. The larger diameter line will allow the amount of water supplied to the region’s water users to increase from 34 MGD to 70 MGD. It will also improve the level of service to the south and east sides of Fort Smith.

Phase IV of the transmission line will extend the transmission line from the end of Phase III to H Street in Barling.  This phase, currently under design, is expected to include approximately 2.2 miles of 48-inch pipe and cross under the Arkansas River.

Previous Phases

Phase I of this project is complete. Approximately six miles of the transmission line was installed from the Lake Fort Smith Water Treatment Facility in Mountainburg to a location near the intersection of S.H. 282 and I-49.

Phase II  is currently under design. This phase will extend the transmission line an additional 12 miles from the end of Phase I to a location near the intersection of Rudy Road and Old Dollard Way.

Phase III will extend the transmission line from the end of Phase II to Gun Club Road / Levee Road near the Highway 59 crossing of the Arkansas River.  This phase is currently under design and will consist of approximately 10 miles of 48-inch pipe.
